A Survery on the Level of Knowledge of Military Personnel and Civilians on the Methodlogy of Identification of Mass Casualties


Abstract
Indentification of personnel in the military during war or peace time is very important from legal and humanitarian points of view. Accepted methods to establish a positive identification include: visual/facial chara
cteristics, fingerprints,
dental
characteristics. DNA, personal effects, and medical information. Of these, visual/facial characteristics, fingerprints, and dental characteristics are more widely used. Korean Government has the atabase of fingerprints of all people of Koran for
forensic identification purpose.
The purpose of the study is to assess the necessity of second identification system within the Ministry of national defense prepared for mass disaster or casualties in the military. Fourteen questions regarding the knowledge on the methodology of
identifictation of mass casualkties were asked of 204 participants composed of 96 active duty military personnel, 46 retired military personnel, 22 military dependents, and 40civilians.

@EN 1. The request of respondents for accurate individual identification were very high.
2. The level of knowledge of respondents were high.
3. The level of knowledge of respondents on the dental identification were high.
4. The level of knowledge of repondents on the DNA identification were low.
5. The second identification system as well as the fingerprints system is highly requested in the military, that is, within the Ministry of National Defense.
